UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday named Rauf Engin Soysal of Turkey as his new special envoy on aid to Pakistan, taking on the crucial job of coordinating help for Pakistan's flood disaster.
He takes the place of Jean Maurice Ripert of France, who has been in the position for the past year.
Soysal is currently a deputy undersecretary for political affairs and was Turkey's ambassador to Pakistan from 2007 to 2009.
After concentrating on helping refugees and displaced from conflict in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, the post must now focus on helping Pakistan after it devastating floods since July.
Ban Ki-moon thanked Ripert “for the important contribution he made over the past year in mobilizing assistance to internally displaced peoples in the north of Pakistan and the emergency phase of the flood situation in the country.”
